Animal profile
Tremarctos ornatus
The spectacled or Andean bear is the only bear native to South America and the last survivor of the short-faced bear lineage. It is largely vegetarian, feeding heavily on bromeliads and palm hearts, and builds platforms in trees to feed and rest. Pale markings around the eyes and muzzle vary between individuals and give the species its name.
