The spectacled caiman is the most widespread and abundant crocodilian in the Americas, named for a bony ridge between the eyes resembling the bridge of a pair of spectacles. Adults are modest in size, usually under two and a half metres, and the species colonises disturbed and artificial waterbodies readily.
