Field profile

The spiny dogfish is a small schooling shark, usually under 1.2 metres, with a venomous spine before each dorsal fin and no anal fin. It forms enormous same-sex, same-size schools and feeds on fish, squid and crustaceans. It has been one of the most heavily fished sharks in the world.
