Field profile

The spotted bat is unmistakable: jet-black fur with three large white patches, pink translucent ears longer than its head, and a preference for roosting alone in cracks in high cliffs. It feeds heavily on moths. Its echolocation calls are low enough in frequency to be audible to many people.

Spotted Bat

A bat whose sonar humans can hear

Most bat echolocation sits well above the range of human hearing. The spotted bat calls at frequencies low enough that many people can hear it as a sharp metallic click overhead, an adaptation that appears aimed at moths.
