Field profile

A tan or brown chorus frog under three centimetres long, marked with a darker X on the back that gives it the name crucifer. Its high whistled call is one of the first sounds of spring across eastern North America. Choruses can be heard from a considerable distance.

A frog the size of a paperclip carries a kilometre

Spring peepers weigh a few grams, yet a full chorus is audible far across a landscape. The volume comes from an inflatable throat sac that works as a resonator, driven by some of the fastest muscles in vertebrates.
