The stoat, called the short-tailed weasel or ermine in North America, is a small slender carnivore that hunts rodents and rabbits in their own burrows. In northern parts of its range it moults to a white winter coat with a black tail tip. Introduced to New Zealand in the nineteenth century, it became one of that country's most damaging invasive predators.
