Field profile

The Sunda colugo is a nocturnal, leaf-eating gliding mammal of Southeast Asian forests. Its gliding membrane is the most extensive of any mammal, running from the shoulders to the fingertips, toes and tail tip. Despite the old name flying lemur, it neither flies nor is a lemur.

Sunda Colugo

The colugo has the most complete gliding membrane of any mammal

Its patagium runs from the shoulder blades to the fore paws, from the fingertips to the toes, and from the hind legs to the tip of the tail, including the webbing between digits. Glides of about seventy metres are routine.
