Field profile

The tammar wallaby is a small macropod about the size of a hare, found mainly on offshore islands. It shelters in dense scrub by day and grazes in clearings at night. It has been studied intensively as a model marsupial and was among the first to have its genome sequenced.

Tammar Wallaby

Island tammar wallabies can drink seawater

On Kangaroo Island and other offshore populations without permanent fresh water, tammar wallabies have been recorded drinking seawater and surviving on it. Their kidneys concentrate urine strongly enough to make the salt load a net gain.
