Field profile

The Tasmanian devil is the largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, a stocky black scavenger about the size of a small dog. It feeds heavily on carrion, consuming bone and fur along with flesh, and is famous for the screeching disputes that break out at carcasses. Since the 1990s its numbers have fallen steeply because of a transmissible cancer.
