Field profile

A round, red-orange burrowing frog endemic to a small area of north-eastern Madagascar. Females are larger and more intensely coloured than males. It spends much of its time buried, emerging after rain to breed in temporary shallow water.

Tomato Frog

The tomato frog glues a predator's mouth shut

When seized, it inflates and secretes a thick white skin mucus that is sticky and irritating. The gum can bind a snake's jaws temporarily and causes enough discomfort that the frog is usually dropped.
