Sphenodon punctatus
The tuatara is the only surviving member of Rhynchocephalia, an order that diverged from squamates over 200 million years ago. It reaches about 60 centimetres, is active at unusually low body temperatures, and can live well beyond a century. It is endemic to New Zealand.
