Field profile

The undulate ray is patterned with dark wavy bands edged in pale spots, a marking unlike any other northeast Atlantic skate. It occupies shallow inshore grounds and has one of the most fragmented distributions of any European ray.

Undulate Ray

The undulate ray lives in scattered pockets

Its range map is not a band along the coast but a handful of separated patches, from the English Channel to Morocco and the western Mediterranean. Local abundance can be high inside a pocket while the gaps between them stay empty.
