Vaquita

Field profile

The vaquita is the smallest porpoise, about 1.5 metres long, with dark rings around the eyes and mouth. It has the smallest range of any marine cetacean, confined to the shallow northern Gulf of California. It has never been abundant, and gillnet entanglement has reduced it to a handful of animals.
