Animal profile
Varroa destructor
The varroa mite is a flat, reddish-brown external parasite about 1.6 millimetres wide that feeds on honey bees. It originally parasitised the Asian honey bee and jumped to the western honey bee in the twentieth century. It is now the single most serious pest of managed honey bees.
