The Asian water monitor is a large semi-aquatic lizard that commonly exceeds one and a half metres including tail. It swims strongly, climbs well and eats almost anything it can overpower or scavenge, from crabs and fish to carrion. It is among the few big reptiles that thrive alongside dense human settlement.
