Pinnipeds as a group solve the same problem in similar ways: how to stay submerged on one breath. Their solutions include spleen-stored oxygenated blood, lungs that collapse deliberately, drastic circulatory shutdown and muscle chemistry unlike that of any land mammal. The Weddell seal is the best-studied example.
