Western hoolock gibbon

Field profile

The western hoolock gibbon is the only ape native to India, holding a fragmented range across the north-eastern states and into Bangladesh and Myanmar. It lives in small family groups and feeds mainly on ripe figs and other fruit. Males and females look strikingly different as adults.
