Field profile

The whale shark is the largest living fish, reliably reaching twelve metres and occasionally more. It feeds by filtering plankton, small fish and fish eggs from the water, and gathers at predictable seasonal sites where prey concentrates. Each individual carries a unique pattern of pale spots and stripes.
