The white-nosed coati is a diurnal relative of the raccoon with a long flexible snout and an upright banded tail. Females and young live in noisy foraging bands while adult males are largely solitary, an arrangement that misled early naturalists. It forages by probing leaf litter and rotten wood for invertebrates and fruit.
