The wild turkey is a large, strong-legged forest gamebird with iridescent bronze plumage and bare head skin that changes colour with mood. Males fan their tails and gobble to attract females in spring. Hunted almost to regional extinction by the early twentieth century, it was restored across North America by trap-and-transfer programmes.
