Wood Turtle

Field profile

The wood turtle has a sculpted carapace whose scutes look like carved wood, with orange skin on the neck and legs. It divides its year between clear streams and adjacent floodplain, which makes it dependent on both. Slow maturity, road mortality and collection have reduced it across most of its range.
