Woolly Mammoth

The woolly mammoth was a cold-adapted elephant with a thick coat, small ears and long curving tusks, comparable in shoulder height to a modern African elephant but more compactly built. It grazed the mammoth steppe across the northern hemisphere. Mainland populations died out around ten thousand years ago, but island relicts persisted much longer.
