Field profile

The yellow perch is a shoaling, olive-and-gold panfish with six to eight dark vertical bars and two dorsal fins, the first spiny. It feeds on invertebrates and small fish in shallow water. Most adults are under 30 centimetres.

Yellow Perch

Yellow perch lay eggs in accordion-shaped ribbons

Yellow perch do not scatter eggs or build nests. The female extrudes a single hollow gelatinous ribbon, folded like an accordion and often a metre or more long, which she drapes over submerged branches and vegetation and then abandons.
