The rove beetle family Staphylinidae is defined by these truncated elytra, which free the abdomen for movement into crevices and under bark. The cost is that the hindwing must be stored in a much smaller space, and rove beetles solve it with an elaborate origami. The wing folds along both transverse and longitudinal creases, and elastic energy stored in the wing itself drives the unfolding when the beetle takes off.
Packing it away is the harder half. The beetle uses the tip of its abdomen and the edges of the elytra to press and tuck the wing back into place, a sequence that takes a few seconds and has been filmed in detail. Studies of the folding pattern have been used as a model in deployable-structure engineering.
The threat posture is bluff and chemistry together. The raised abdomen resembles a scorpion's but carries no sting; the beetle can, however, release a foul secretion from abdominal glands and deliver a genuinely painful bite with its large mandibles.
