The mechanism is a catapult built from elastic ligaments. Between strikes the jaws are held retracted and loaded; releasing them lets stored elastic energy drive the jaws forward far faster than muscle alone could, while the tongue-like basihyal drops to create suction that pulls prey in behind them. Two Japanese specimens filmed in 2008 and analysed in 2016 gave the first measured account of the sequence.
The long snout is not a weapon. It is packed with ampullae of Lorenzini, the electroreceptive pores sharks use to sense the muscle activity of nearby animals, which matters in water with no light.
Almost everything else is thin. Goblin sharks are known from a few hundred specimens, mostly caught incidentally in deep-set nets and longlines, and no one has observed a mating or a birth. The species is listed Least Concern mainly because it lives deeper than most fishing gear reaches.
