The mousing pounce is a high, arched leap that drives the forelimbs and muzzle down through snow or grass onto a rodent located by sound alone. The fox must estimate depth as well as direction, and the near-vertical entry keeps the strike tight around the target.
An analysis of hundreds of pounces recorded by observers in the Czech Republic reported a directional bias, with attacks clustered toward magnetic north-east and a higher success rate for those aimed that way, particularly in high vegetation or deep snow. The authors proposed magnetoreception as a rangefinder, letting the fox judge distance by aligning a fixed angle between a magnetic cue and the sound source.
This is genuinely interesting and genuinely unconfirmed. It comes from observational data rather than controlled manipulation of magnetic fields, no independent replication has established it, and the proposed mechanism has no identified sensory basis in foxes. The uncontested part is the hunting technique itself, and the fox's habit of caching surplus kills in shallow scrapes and recovering them later.
