Work on the Australian species Cicindela hudsoni recorded speeds around 2.5 metres per second, roughly 120 body lengths per second. At that pace the compound eyes cannot integrate enough photons per unit time to resolve the prey, and the image dims and blurs.
The beetle compensates by pausing. A chase is a sequence of sprints separated by brief stops during which the beetle re-fixes the target, then runs again. The antennae are held rigidly forward during the sprint and act as mechanical feelers, detecting obstacles in the path while vision is unavailable, a role confirmed by experiments in which antennal position was manipulated.
The larva hunts by the opposite strategy. It anchors itself in a vertical burrow with hooks on the abdomen, waits with its flattened head plugging the entrance, and seizes prey that walks past, dragging it down. Adult and larva share a diet but almost nothing of a hunting method.
