In parthenogenesis, an egg develops without fertilisation. In Carausius morosus the process is thelytokous, meaning the offspring are female, which allows a lone insect to found an entire lineage. A single female lays hundreds of eggs across her adult life, dropping or flicking them to the ground where they resemble plant seeds.
The eggs of many phasmids have a fatty capitulum that ants find attractive, and ants carry them underground, a dispersal relationship comparable to that of seeds with elaiosomes. Incubation is slow, often several months, and nymphs resemble small adults, moulting several times without a pupal stage.
Males of this species do exist and have been reported rarely in captive stock, but they are aberrant and their fertility is poor. What is not resolved is whether sexual reproduction plays any meaningful role in wild Indian populations, since the species has been studied far more in laboratory culture than in its native range.
