Venom potency is usually ranked by the median lethal dose in mice. On that measure the inland taipan sits at the top of the snake list, with a subcutaneous value in the region of a few hundredths of a milligram per kilogram, a figure roughly an order of magnitude below that of many well-known dangerous species.
That number describes chemistry, not risk. The species occupies a small area of Australia's black-soil interior where human population density is very low, it spends much of the day underground in soil cracks, and its normal response to a person is withdrawal. Recorded bites are few, most involve herpetologists or keepers, and antivenom together with modern intensive care has meant no confirmed fatality.
The common error is to translate a mouse assay directly into a human ranking of danger. Deaths track encounter rate, defensive temperament, venom yield and access to treatment far more than they track a laboratory toxicity figure, which is why species with milder venom kill vastly more people.
