Acropora palmata occupies the reef crest, the shallowest and most turbulent zone of a Caribbean reef. Its branches are broad and blade-like rather than cylindrical, and colonies commonly orient into the prevailing swell. That combination lets a thicket stand in conditions that would dislodge more delicate growth forms.
The hydrodynamic consequence is measurable. Coral reef crests attenuate the majority of incident wave energy before it crosses the reef flat, and studies of Caribbean and Pacific reefs have consistently found the crest to be the zone doing most of that work. Where the crest flattens, more energy reaches the shoreline.
The species was listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act in 2006, alongside staghorn coral, following declines widely attributed to white-band disease, bleaching and storm damage. The point often lost is that the coastal-protection loss is not hypothetical or slow: a standing dead skeleton erodes, and the structure disappears years after the tissue does.
