Pygmy squid have an adhesive organ on the back of the mantle that produces a two-part glue. They stick to seagrass blades, wait motionless, and release on demand without leaving residue.
Known from carcasses since the nineteenth century, Architeuthis was never seen alive in its habitat until a Japanese team hooked one on a baited line at about 900 metres and photographed the encounter.
Nearly all cephalopods have a single visual pigment. Watasenia scintillans has three, an anatomy that would allow it to distinguish wavelengths in the deep water where bioluminescence and residual daylight differ in colour.
